To schedule an Instagram post, open the Instagram app, tap **Create**, choose **Post** or **Reel**, add your media and caption, tap **More options**, turn on **Schedule this post**, pick a date and time, and tap **Schedule**. Any public account can do this, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days ahead.

That is how to schedule Instagram posts natively. For Stories, desktop scheduling, or more than one network, you need Meta Business Suite or a third-party scheduler. This guide covers all three, using Meta's own help pages as checked on October 5, 2026, then gives you a pre-flight checklist and fixes for posts that fail. I build PostQuest, one of the schedulers covered here, so the free native options come first.

## Can you schedule Instagram posts?

Yes. You can schedule Instagram posts in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite, or with a third-party scheduler. According to [Instagram's help center](https://help.instagram.com/439971288310029), any public account can schedule photos, carousels, and reels in the app, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days in advance. You no longer need a professional account for this. [Instagram opened scheduling to all public accounts on March 1, 2026](https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/instagram-opens-up-content-scheduling-to-all-users/813448/).

Two details trip people up. First, older guides cite a 75-day window. [Buffer's guide](https://buffer.com/resources/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts/), for example, mentions 75 days from Instagram's earlier documentation, but Meta's help page now says 30 days. Second, the in-app scheduler does not handle Stories, and it does not work with product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts, or fundraisers. Private accounts cannot schedule at all.

Meta Business Suite adds Stories and desktop scheduling for professional accounts. Third-party schedulers add multi-network calendars, but they publish through Meta's API, which only accepts Business or Creator accounts.

## How to schedule Instagram posts in the Instagram app

The Instagram app's built-in scheduler is the quickest option for a single account. Any public account, personal or professional, can schedule photos, carousels, and reels up to 30 days ahead and up to 25 posts a day, according to [Meta's help center](https://help.instagram.com/439971288310029) as checked on October 5, 2026. It cannot schedule Stories, and it does not work with product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts, or fundraisers. Private accounts cannot use it. A scheduled post keeps the privacy and audience settings your account had when you scheduled it. You manage everything from **Scheduled content** in your profile menu, where you can edit, reschedule, share now, or delete each post. Because the scheduler lives inside the posting flow, you finish editing first and set the time as the last step before sharing.

These steps follow Meta's current instructions:

1. Tap **Create** in the top left, or swipe right anywhere in your feed. Then tap **Post** or **Reel**.
2. Select a photo or video and tap **Next**.
3. Add your caption, effects, or filters.
4. Tap **More options**.
5. Turn on **Schedule this post** or **Schedule this reel**, then choose a date and time.
6. Tap **Done**, then tap **Back**.
7. Tap **Schedule**.

### How to edit or reschedule a scheduled Instagram post

Go to your profile, tap **Menu**, and under **Your insights and tools** tap **Scheduled content**. You can also tap **Create** and then **Scheduled**. Tap **Options** next to a post to choose **Edit post**, **Reschedule**, **Share now**, or **Delete**.

### What the Instagram app can't schedule

- **Stories.** Meta lists reels, photos, and carousels only.
- **Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts, and fundraisers.** Meta says these features "aren't compatible with scheduled content at this time."
- **Private accounts.** You must have a public account.
- **More than 30 days ahead, or more than 25 posts a day.**

## How to schedule reels on Instagram

You schedule a reel the same way as a photo: tap **Create**, choose **Reel**, edit it, tap **More options**, and turn on **Schedule this reel**. Do all your editing first, since the scheduled reel goes out as you saved it.

If you schedule reels from Meta Business Suite instead, [Meta notes two limits for Instagram](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/794942355314453): you can't create a reel from photos, and you can't edit the video in Business Suite. Upload a finished video, choose a thumbnail, and schedule it from there.

## How to schedule Instagram posts in Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite is Meta's free desktop and mobile tool for Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts. It can schedule posts, reels, and Stories, and its Planner shows them on a weekly or monthly calendar.

It works with professional accounts. To manage Instagram in Business Suite, your account must be a [professional account connected to a Facebook Page](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/connect-instagram-to-page) in the same business portfolio. Meta's guide notes that personal accounts are prompted to switch during linking.

To schedule a post on desktop, following [Meta's desktop guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/942827662903020):

1. Open Meta Business Suite and click **Create post**.
2. Under **Post to**, select your Instagram account. You can add your Facebook Page as well.
3. Under **Media**, add up to 10 photos for Instagram.
4. Write the text. You can customize it separately for Facebook and Instagram.
5. Under **Scheduling options**, choose the date and time. **Active times** suggests slots based on when your followers were active over the past seven days.
6. Click **Schedule**.

To schedule an Instagram Story on desktop, following [Meta's Stories guide](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/972600925713914):

1. Click **Create story**.
2. Under **Post to**, select your Instagram account, your Facebook Page, or both.
3. Under **Media**, add up to 10 photos or videos.
4. Under **Scheduling options**, choose **Schedule** and pick the date and time.
5. Click **Schedule**.

In the mobile app, tap **Content**, pick Posts, Reels, or Stories, tap **Create**, and then tap **Schedule for later**.

Meta's Business Suite articles don't state a maximum scheduling window. Check the date picker before you plan a month out.

![PostQuest field guide with a decision flow for choosing how to schedule Instagram posts. A private account must go public first. If you only need photos, carousels, and reels within 30 days, use the Instagram app. If you need Stories or desktop scheduling with a professional account, use Meta Business Suite. If you need several networks, pre-publish checks, or an AI assistant, use a third-party scheduler with a Business or Creator account.](/infographics/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts/decision-flow.webp)

## How do third-party Instagram schedulers post for you?

A third-party Instagram scheduler is a tool that stores your post and publishes it at the chosen time through Meta's [Instagram content publishing API](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/content-publishing/), which accepts only Business and Creator accounts. That API sets the rules every scheduler has to follow, whatever its marketing says.

- **Account type.** The API serves only [professional accounts](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/overview), meaning Business or Creator. With Instagram Login, no Facebook Page is needed. With Facebook Login, the account must be linked to a Page.
- **Formats.** Single images, videos and reels, Stories, and carousels of up to 10 mixed images and videos.
- **Not supported.** Meta's documentation states that shopping tags and filters are not supported. The media reference also has no option for picking a track from Instagram's music library. You can only name a reel's original audio.
- **Supported extras.** Alt text on images (not reels or Stories), up to three collaborators on feed posts and reels, user tags, a reel cover image, and trial reels, according to the [media endpoint reference](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/instagram-graph-api/reference/ig-user/media).
- **Volume.** An account can publish up to 100 posts through the API in a rolling 24-hour period, according to Meta's [content publishing docs](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/content-publishing/) as of October 5, 2026.

Some schedulers also add a "first comment" by calling Meta's [comments endpoint](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/instagram-graph-api/reference/ig-media/comments) right after the post goes live. Whether you get collaborators, first comments, or alt text depends on what each tool has built, so check before you commit.

## Which is better for scheduling Instagram posts: the app, Business Suite, or a scheduler?

If you post only to Instagram, rarely more than a few weeks ahead, the app is enough. If you also manage a Facebook Page and want Stories, Business Suite is free and capable. A scheduler earns its cost when you publish to several networks or want checks and AI help in one place. The third column uses PostQuest as the example because I can verify its behavior; other schedulers differ.

## How to schedule Instagram posts with PostQuest

PostQuest is a web-based social media scheduler for founders, creators, and small teams. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Bluesky, and Mastodon. I built it, so here are the exact steps in the current editor.

![PostQuest field guide showing five steps to schedule an Instagram post in PostQuest: connect a Business or Creator account, choose Post, Reel, or Story, add media and a cover, write the caption per account, and pick a time and clear the checks. 1. **Connect Instagram.** Sign in with an Instagram Business or Creator account. To add a second account, log out or switch accounts on instagram.com first, then connect again.
2. **Start a post.** Click **Create post**, or hover over a day in the calendar and click **+** to start a post set for 9:00 a.m. that day. Under **Where should this go?**, select one or more Instagram accounts.
3. **Choose the format and add media.** In the **Media** panel, choose **Post**, **Reel**, or **Story**. A post can be one photo or a carousel of 2 to 10 photos and videos. For video, you can pick a cover frame or upload a cover image. **Media requirements** shows the current limits.
4. **Write the caption.** Each selected account gets its own tab, so you can tailor the caption per account. A counter shows your length against Instagram's 2,200-character limit.
5. **Pick a time and schedule.** Set the date and time, which use your workspace time zone, then click **Schedule**. If something breaks Instagram's rules, such as an unsupported aspect ratio or an over-long caption, the button stays disabled and lists the reasons. You can also click **Save to drafts**.

![The PostQuest editor with an Instagram account selected: Post, Reel, and Story options above the media panel, one attached photo, a caption counted against Instagram's 2,200-character limit, and an Instagram preview of the post](/infographics/how-to-schedule-instagram-posts/postquest-composer.webp)

After scheduling, drag a scheduled post to another day in the calendar to move it. Once it goes live, **Publish results** shows a link to the post. If publishing fails, you get a **Retry** button, or **Reconnect** if Instagram revoked access.

### Schedule Instagram posts from Claude or ChatGPT

With the [PostQuest MCP server for Claude](/mcp/claude) or the [PostQuest app for ChatGPT](/mcp/chatgpt), you can ask your assistant to write a caption, attach media, and prepare an Instagram post. The post is created as a draft. The assistant checks it against Instagram's requirements, and it can only schedule, publish, or delete after you explicitly approve. My walkthrough on using Claude MCP to schedule social media posts shows the full flow.

### What PostQuest doesn't do on Instagram

PostQuest currently sends the caption, media, cover, and format to Instagram. It does not add a first comment, collaborators, location, user tags, or alt text on Instagram. It has no best-time suggestions, so if you want those, tools such as Buffer, Later, and Sprout Social offer them. It also has no multi-person approval workflow.

The seven-day trial includes 20 scheduled or published posts. After that, [plans](/#pricing) start at $15 a month.

## What are Instagram's limits before you schedule a post?

Instagram rejects or crops posts that break its media and caption limits, so run this pre-flight checklist before you schedule anything. The values come from Meta's documentation as of October 5, 2026. For every size and file limit, see the full [Instagram specs](/specs/instagram).

Hashtags deserve special attention. Meta's API reference still says 30, but Instagram announced in December 2025 that captions for posts and reels would be capped at five. Trim old caption templates to five targeted tags.

## Why did my scheduled Instagram post fail?

A scheduled Instagram post usually fails because the account is personal or private, access expired, the media breaks a size or length limit, the post uses an unsupported feature, or the caption is too long. Reconnect the account first, then check the media limits. Work through the causes in this order:

1. **The account is personal or private.** Schedulers need a Business or Creator account. The in-app scheduler needs a public account.
2. **Access expired.** Changing your password, removing the app's access, or leaving a business portfolio can break the connection. Reconnect the account, then retry.
3. **The media breaks a limit.** Feed images must be 4:5 to 1.91:1 and 320–1,440 px wide. Reels must run 3 seconds to 15 minutes at 23–60 fps. Re-export anything outside those limits and retry.
4. **The post uses an unsupported feature.** Product tags and collaborative posts don't work with in-app scheduling. Shopping tags and filters aren't available through the API.
5. **The caption is too long or has too many hashtags.** Keep it under 2,200 characters and five hashtags.
6. **The time zone is wrong.** If the post went out, just not when you expected, check the time zone setting in your scheduler.

If a post shows as scheduled but never appears, open the scheduled content list or your tool's publish log before you post it again. That avoids duplicates.

## When should you schedule Instagram posts?

Schedule Instagram posts for weekday afternoons or early evenings, about 3–8 p.m. in your audience's local time, with Tuesday as the safest day. That is where six recent studies overlap most. [Sprout Social's 2026 analysis](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/best-times-to-post-on-instagram/) of nearly 2 billion engagements, for example, recommends Tuesday 1–7 p.m.

Start with the slots in [the best time to post on Instagram](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-instagram), and compare them with other networks in the [best time to post on social media](/blog/best-time-to-post-on-social-media) guide. Then batch a week of posts in one sitting, following the routine in [how to build a consistent social media posting schedule](/blog/build-a-consistent-social-media-posting-schedule).

If you schedule for more than one network, the same approach carries over. See how to schedule TikTok posts and how to schedule LinkedIn posts.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you schedule Instagram Stories?

Not in the Instagram app. Meta's help center lists only reels, photos, and carousels for in-app scheduling. You can schedule Stories in Meta Business Suite on desktop or mobile if you have a professional account linked to a Facebook Page. Third-party schedulers can also publish Stories through Meta's API. Because a Story disappears after 24 hours, schedule it for a time when you can answer replies.

### Can you schedule Instagram posts for free?

Yes. The Instagram app lets any public account schedule photos, carousels, and reels at no cost, up to 30 days ahead and 25 posts a day. Meta Business Suite is also free and adds Stories and desktop scheduling for professional accounts. Paid schedulers make sense when you manage several networks or accounts, or want pre-publish checks in one calendar.

### Can you schedule Instagram posts from a computer?

Yes. Meta's scheduling instructions are written for the Instagram mobile app, so on a computer the reliable route is Meta Business Suite, which schedules posts, reels, and Stories for professional accounts. A web-based scheduler such as PostQuest also works in any browser. Both need a professional account: Business Suite requires one linked to a Facebook Page, and schedulers require Business or Creator.

### Can you schedule a collab post on Instagram?

Not with the in-app scheduler. Meta says collaborative posts aren't compatible with scheduled content. Meta's API does allow up to three collaborators on feed posts and reels, so some third-party schedulers support collab posts. PostQuest doesn't add collaborators. If you need a collab post, publish it manually in the app at your chosen time.
