How X counts characters
- Letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks count as 1.
- Every link counts as 23, however long it is, because X shortens it with t.co.
- Every emoji counts as 2, including skin tones, flags, and combined emoji such as 👨👩👧.
- Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as 2, so a free post fits 140 of them.
- @mentions and #hashtags count like any other text. Attached photos and videos count as 0.
X character limit

X character counter FAQ
What is the X character limit?
X captions can be up to 280 characters long. Free accounts post up to 280 characters. A paid subscription raises the limit to 25,000 characters.
Do links count toward the X character limit?
Yes, but every link counts as exactly 23 characters, however long it is, because X shortens links with t.co. Links without https://, such as example.com, count as 23 too.
Do emoji count as two characters on X?
Yes. Every emoji counts as 2, including skin tones, flags, and combined emoji. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters also count as 2.
How long can an X Premium post be?
Accounts with a paid X subscription can post up to 25,000 characters. Turn on the Premium switch above the counter to check against that limit.
Does PostQuest check the X limit before publishing?
Yes. PostQuest counts every X post the way X does and checks it against the connected account’s limit, 280 or 25,000, before it can be scheduled.
