How Mastodon counts characters

  • Mastodon does not publish how it counts emoji, so this counter uses the rule PostQuest checks before publishing: every Unicode character counts as 1.
  • Spaces, line breaks, links, @mentions, and #hashtags count character by character.
  • Most emoji count as 1, but combined emoji count each part, so 👨‍👩‍👧 counts as 5.

Mastodon character limit

500 characters (instance default)

  • Instances configure their own limit; 500 characters is the default.

Mastodon character counter FAQ

What is the Mastodon character limit?

Mastodon captions can be up to 500 characters long by default. Instances configure their own limit; 500 characters is the default.

Do spaces and line breaks count on Mastodon?

Yes. Every space and line break counts as one character toward the Mastodon limit.

How do emoji count on Mastodon?

Mastodon does not publish its rule. PostQuest counts each Unicode character as 1, so most emoji count as 1 and combined emoji, such as a family, count each part.

Does PostQuest check the Mastodon limit before publishing?

Yes. PostQuest checks every caption against the Mastodon limit before a post can be scheduled, so it never fails at publish time for being too long.

Character counters for other networks

Writing one post for several networks? Check it against all of them at once with the social media character counter.

Schedule posts that pass these checks

PostQuest validates every caption and file against these limits before a post is scheduled, so nothing fails at publish time.
